Yeah, so it looks like people are using the rebate checks they've been getting to uh, "stimulate" certain parts of the economy. Of course, I don't think this is what President Bush had in mind...
Rebates Stimulate Porn Industry

That's one way to get a rise out of the economy.
President Bush's Economic Stimulus Plan has been quite stimulating - for the porn industry.
A swelling number of adult and erotic Web sites have "experienced an upswing in sales in the recent weeks" since the checks have appeared in millions of Americans' mailboxes, according to the Adult Internet Market Research Company.
"Many of the sites we surveyed have reported 20 to 30 percent growth in membership rates since mid-May, when the checks were first sent out, and typically the summer is a slow period for this market," said Kirk Mishkin, head research consultant for AIMRCo.
The stimulus plan sent out checks of up to $600 for individuals and $1,200 for married couples, among other benefits.
"Getting more people to buy porn was probably the last thing Bush had on his mind when he came up with his 'stimulus package,' but we'll take it," said Jillian Fox, of LSGmodels.com, one of the sites AIMRCo monitors.

Date: 2008-07-08 04:02 pm (UTC)I guess I'm surprised because in retrospect it seems so obvious that portions of the rebates would be spent on sex, booze, drugs, etc...And yet that thought never popped into my mind. I kept thinking people would spend the rebates to help pay off debts rather than pour it back into the economy. Not once did it occur to me that the rebates would be poured into such not-so-durable goods.
