One of the things I like to do is save my spare change in a container, and every few years go count the change and see how much money I end up with. So I drafted [livejournal.com profile] unclekage to help, and we went to counting...

8,420 coins and $350 or so later... and this is what we came up with:

Coins!

Coins! Coins! Coins!

I figure this should be spending money for Furry Connection North when I go in 3 months.

Oh, and what happened to all of the coins? I sold them to Grandma Kage. I did NOT inquire what plans she had for them.

I seriously don't see you lugging around $350+ worth of coins in your wallet mister. :P

And that would be why I converted them into $20 bills.

I had that problem until I started using my credit card to pay for everything.

Hopefully that didn't result in trading one small problem for another, far worse problem. :o)

You manually rolled all those individually? Doesn't your bank have a free coin counter machine? We save our change in a big pretzel jug which we just upend into the machine. Five minutes at the bank and you get a receipt which becomes cash, check, or direct deposit.

There was one of those machines at the grocery store when I was living in Ohio.

I have searched in vain for them here in Winnipeg. Banks don't know what I'm talking about, and neither does anyone else I ask. Handrolling it is. :(

The Chevy Chase bank near me has a machine it it that will count them for free - but only if you're a Chevy Chase member. My bank has no such machine. My grocery stores all have CoinStar machines, which charge a fee per dollar counted.

Chevy Chase will charge non-customers a fee, but unless they've changed the fees, it's still somewhat less than Coinstar machines will charge.

Odd, must have been a recent change, because I have been taking my coins to Chevy Chase for awhile now, I'm not a bank member, and I have never been charged for it.

Nope. But then again, my bank reimburses me for ATM fees--even those charged by other banks. So I think I have a pretty good deal with them.

Kage rolled about half the coins with the "help" of a coin machine. (It was the stuff his stories are made of, really)

Hey, how is that Furry Connection North? Chance I might be in the neighborhood, and I know nothing about it.

This is what we had in the sponsor lounge last year:

I think we went through SIX of those over the weekend.

And the theme for this year? "Prohibition"

o.O Why not just go to a bank and drop it in a coin counter? A LOT faster. Granted I would have saved the quarters.
Heck I would have probably converted everything into Gold Dollars http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/index.cfm?action=golden_dollar_coin

and waded through it on the floor like Scrooge McDuck. :x)

Um, let's see:

- I don't own a car and the coins weighed somewhere around 50 pounds.

- My bank doesn't offer coin counting that I know of.

- Grandma Kage wanted pennies. Who am I to argue?

Hay why not coin machine... oh wait that's been said about a dozen times already.

For me there is something oddly satisfying about counting through an enormous pile of change, even if it isn't mine. If it wasn't a 10 hour drive I'd have been around to help in a heartbeat ;)
