Really? I'm surprised, for some reason. Congrats on knowing and accepting who you are. I have a dear friend who is just starting the coming out process in his 40s.
First off, double congrats for coming out in public for the first time. Do your folks know yet? Explicitly, I mean.
O.K., the story. Giza and I met online through antispam work: CAUCE, suespammers.org (now defunct), and eventually SpamCon Foundation. We somehow discovered that the other was furry, and decided to room together at Anthrocon 1999. (When we got there, we discovered that they'd given us a room with only one bed... but that's another story. Yes, we finagled a cot out of them -- get your minds out of the gutter! ;) )
We'd pretty much just met, and been hanging out for an hour or two. He lived with his parents then, and while we were walking to the elevator, I asked him whether they knew he was furry. Actually, what I said was, "Are you out to your folks?"
He stopped dead and gave me a surprised look. I think he said something like, "How did you know I'm gay?" I said, "I didn't."
And here we are now. It's always been good to know you, Giza, and I hope we stay friends forever.
And I remember you mentioned at one point, "Do you have a problem is I bring a female back to the room one night?", or similar. And that had me thinking that you were straight for what, 2 or 3 months afterward? :-)
Don't feel bad -- some people are confused for years. :)
On a side note, I've noticed that a lot of people still assume that anyone who's sympathetic and understanding must be gay themselves. I hope that will change with time.
I don't really experience it here in San Francisco... unlike other areas, most people have at least a little conscious contact with "out" gay people. So even if they're hostile underneath -- and some people are -- they at least possess basic understanding. And they all know straight people who are sympathetic, so they know that sympathy != gay.
Ah, thanks! Yeah, it looks like we have a lot in common -- have we talked about poly stuff as well? I used to watch the polyamory group, but it grew too high-traffic.
I'm also gay (though a day late in saying so at this point). Ironically, my mother's birthday was also the 11th. But I already came out to her. Fascinating.
Anyway, I'm glad you have accepted it enough to state it here. :)
Heh, I think I always just assumed you were, seeing as I don't seem to know any heterosexual male leopards online.. I think I assume too much sometimes, but at least I was right :). I am too, incase nobody was able to guess..
DUDE! It's just that kinda shit that keeps people from wanting to be honest. I dont want to go off on a rant here, but jesus man, that kind of mind set just isn't called for here.
