Another sign I'm getting old: for the very first time, someone from some company's HR department called me on the phone earlier today to do a reference check on a friend of mine.
You did tell them that the friend is the official Amway representative for Scientology, and that he didn't really *mean* to kill his family, right?
Seriously, though, I ran my own shop for 7 years, and would regularly tell companies whatever my friends wanted me to, as long as they told me in advance. If not, they were fair game.
I realized that I was getting old when I was the same age or slightly older than my co-workers. I used to be the youngest guy around. I was 19 when I started working in the tech field, and most of the people were either college graduates or part time students who were all like 25+.
