The desecration of marraige
Jan. 5th, 2004 05:47 pmConservatives just love to complain about same-sex marriages because they say it would "desecrate the institution of marriage". Well, judging from this article on CNN, they don't need our help to make marriage a joke since heterosexual couples are doing that well enough on their own. Here are some quotes from the article:
I shouldn't be allowed to have this much fun on Mondays!
Britney Spears' two-day-old marriage to a childhood friend was dissolved Monday shortly after the pop superstar filed for an annulment, claiming she didn't fully understand what she was doing when she got hitched on the spur of the moment.I guess "'till death do us part" is a bit hard to comphrehend these days, huh. Then there was this:
"It was just crazy, man," the 22-year-old told "Access Hollywood" in an interview at his home Monday morning. "And we were just looking at each other and said, 'Let's do something wild, crazy. Let's go get married, just for the hell of it.' "Wow. Just... wow. That blows my mind how someone can up and decided to get married with no planning whatsoever. I've seen PHBs that have more foresight than that!
According to the petition, "Before entering into the marriage the plaintiff and defendant did not know each other's likes and dislikes, each other's desires to have or not have children, and each other's desires as to state of residency. Upon learning of each other's desires, they are so incompatible that there was a want of understanding of each other's actions in entering into this marriage."
I shouldn't be allowed to have this much fun on Mondays!

Date: 2004-01-05 03:08 pm (UTC)I find the idea that gay marriages would threaten traditional marriages and straight couples quite laughable. Do they think that all these straight guys are going to run off and start dating guys as soon as it was allowed? Silly.
I think the reason for the debate over it is because there are so many differtn viewpoints on marriage: is it a religious institution, a social institution, is it only for having children, etc? I wonder if childless couples (who are that way by choice) are just as bad as homosexual unions in some people's eyes?

Um, it's okay for couples to remain childless, though, because they could have children if they wanted... and, um, it's also okay for infertile couples to marry, because, um... gimme a minute..."

Date: 2004-01-05 11:42 pm (UTC)I guess it's the rich and grown up who can afford to screw up their marriages, while the lower classes tend to take their marriages a lot more seriously. It's an uninformed opinion though; I might be wrong!
