And that was one of the many funny quotes from Bubba Ho-tep, which I saw on Saturday night with [livejournal.com profile] bigtig, [livejournal.com profile] susandeer, Uncle Kage, Valent, [livejournal.com profile] astor_apatosaur, [livejournal.com profile] gideon_hoss, [livejournal.com profile] roxikat, Ken Sample, Lisa Lynx, and a few others whose names I don't remember. (Mad props go to Astor, BTW, for driving some of us around Center City Philly on a Saturday night :-)

Bubba Ho-Tep
Summary: The King of Rock vs. the King of the Dead
Rating: A-
Synopsis: A present-day tale of an aging Elvis in an East Texas rest home, who switched out with an impersonator many years ago who then died before he could switch back. A mummy shows up and starts eating residents, and only Elvis and "JFK" can stop him. The movie is very hard to place into a specific genre, as it's not very action-oriented or particularly gory. I would say it comes closer to "Black Comedy" than anything. A good deal of the movie is spent talking about Elvis's past, the regrets he has, and his general outlook on life. I have the feeling that this movie will end up being a Cult Classic.

And now, some other interesting articles that I've come across in the last week or so:

Pi Approximation Day - Celebrated on July 22nd, since 22/7 is the approximation of Pi.

Bizzare advertisement for lube - You have to see this to understand it. Don't worry, it's G-rated.

A Group is its Own Worst Enemy - An excellent essay by Clay Shirky about the social effects of online groups and how they can become burdened by their own success. He cites examples from Slashdot and (surprise!) Live Journal.

Introduction to XML - A good primer for XML. This is geared more towards non-technical people, but is still good for geeks to read.

That's all for now, happy Monday! :-)

It took me a good 15 seconds to figure out that ad. It's wrong on so many levels. I'm impressed };>.

Even more so than you think.

The French word for those metal things you tie boats to is 'bitte'.

The most common French slang word for a penis is 'bite' (pronounced the same, and sometimes written the same too, with two 't').

So this ad most artfully depicts a girl with a large bitte up her rear.

Pure. Genius.

I'm never going to look at the American slang phrase of "bite me" the same way again...

The number of ways in which different languages can combine and form new ways of expressing sexual innuendos never ceases to amaze and entertain me.

Bitte schön, as some would say. :)

Heh, a bunch of us went to see Bubba Ho-Tep and we all laughed at that line too. The pseudo hieoglyphics in the subtitles were amusing too.

The film was a slight dissapointment, since we were kind of expecting it to be a typical Bruce Campbell movie, but besides the one Sam Rami-esque shot with the scarab, the movie was pretty subdued. However, I really appreciated the charcters of the aging JFK and Elvis, and how you never really knew how much of what they said was the truth or a delusion. Campbell did an excellent job of playing the old king of rock and he gave a lot of heart to the character, including giving him some redembption at the end.

Something else that occured to me was the bathroom graffiti, presumably scrawled by Hotep. Did it not imply that he was somehow confined to that rest home, the same as the people who live there? He was dependent upon the rest home for life just as much as the residents were.

What a strange food chain. :-)

I think that is sort of a theme they were going for. In one way he was lost there, forgotten, like the other members of the rest home.

Did you think of me when the Anubis head appeared in the flashback?

You're SO lucky you got to see "Bubba Ho-Tep" I heard about this movie when it played at the Toronto Film Festival two years ago, but since that time, no art-movie house around the Toronto area has played it.

How can you go wrong when a "B movie" gets an "A plus" rating for its quirkyness, definite instant 'cult classic' status and hey, it stars "Evil Dead" and "Army of Darkness" star, Bruce Campbell!

*sulking because he wants to see it*

Didn't the Royal play it last week? I could have sworn it was in the listings at some point.
