bigtig, susandeer, Uncle Kage, Valent, astor_apatosaur, gideon_hoss, roxikat, Ken Sample, Lisa Lynx, and a few others whose names I don't remember. (Mad props go to Astor, BTW, for driving some of us around Center City Philly on a Saturday night :-)
Bubba Ho-Tep
Summary: The King of Rock vs. the King of the Dead
Rating: A-
Synopsis: A present-day tale of an aging Elvis in an East Texas rest home, who switched out with an impersonator many years ago who then died before he could switch back. A mummy shows up and starts eating residents, and only Elvis and "JFK" can stop him. The movie is very hard to place into a specific genre, as it's not very action-oriented or particularly gory. I would say it comes closer to "Black Comedy" than anything. A good deal of the movie is spent talking about Elvis's past, the regrets he has, and his general outlook on life. I have the feeling that this movie will end up being a Cult Classic.
And now, some other interesting articles that I've come across in the last week or so:
Pi Approximation Day - Celebrated on July 22nd, since 22/7 is the approximation of Pi.
Bizzare advertisement for lube - You have to see this to understand it. Don't worry, it's G-rated.
A Group is its Own Worst Enemy - An excellent essay by Clay Shirky about the social effects of online groups and how they can become burdened by their own success. He cites examples from Slashdot and (surprise!) Live Journal.
Introduction to XML - A good primer for XML. This is geared more towards non-technical people, but is still good for geeks to read.

So this ad most artfully depicts a girl with a large bitte up her rear.

Date: 2004-03-01 06:23 pm (UTC)The film was a slight dissapointment, since we were kind of expecting it to be a typical Bruce Campbell movie, but besides the one Sam Rami-esque shot with the scarab, the movie was pretty subdued. However, I really appreciated the charcters of the aging JFK and Elvis, and how you never really knew how much of what they said was the truth or a delusion. Campbell did an excellent job of playing the old king of rock and he gave a lot of heart to the character, including giving him some redembption at the end.
