[livejournal.com profile] film2edit (Chillymouse) came up to visit me for most of the weekend. On Friday night, we did sushi and plum wine and just hung out and chatted about recent events.

On Saturday, we went to the Franklin Institute and met up with [livejournal.com profile] roxikat, [livejournal.com profile] shortwave81, [livejournal.com profile] flight_line, and Zade(sp?). I got to play with some exhibits and made some toy vehicles in the "space exploration" section of the museum which I am quite certain were not street legal. :-P We also watched a documentary on caves in the Omnimax theater. The film included some obligatory "flying through canyons" scenes.

Afterward, we headed over to the Midtown Diner, only to discover it was closed. (oops) So we instead hiked about 8 blocks to the convention center and visited the pub there for dinner.

Chilly and I then caught the next train back home, and we inflicted the movie Super Troopers on ourselves. If there was ever a movie that made me want to get drunk, that would be it. Then we watched some Family Guy and South Park until we passed out.

On Sunday, I inflicted some Angry Video Game Nerd on Chilly, then we headed over to [livejournal.com profile] unclekage's place to help with sending out the first big batch of Anthrocon registrations. Then we watched a couple of 50s films, and departed our separate ways for the night.

Still waiting to hear the exact date of Furp's funeral. Sounds like it'll be towards the end of the week, though. Once the date is announced, I get to buy last-minute plane tickets, and hope the prices aren't too astronomical...

So, I started off this weekend by getting up early on Saturday morning (which should be illegal, but that's a different story) and heading into the office where co-worker D was teaching a course on CPR. By the end of the day, I learned "Advanced CPR", which included adult, child, and infant CPR, as well as some of the fundamentals behind it. For example, they now recommend doing 30 chest compressions instead of 15, because the blood pressure only starts to rise after doing several chest compressions. If you get interrupted (or only do 15 compressions), the blood pressure stops, and you have to start over.

It was also pointed out to me that, in the State of Washington, learning CPR is now mandatory in order to get a driver's license. As a result, the number of deaths from cardiac arrest has now dropped dramatically, since there are now many people who know CPR.

After getting out, I hooked up with [livejournal.com profile] omnibahumut and [livejournal.com profile] whitefeet and we hung out for the evening. At some point, we went to get dinner and since Whitefeet is into sushi, we hit a local Japanese restaurant. Imagine my surprise, when walking in, and co-worker J walks right up to me! It turns out that a friend of his owned the restaurant, and asked co-worker J to help him out that night because he was short-staffed.

I had some sushi too, and it ended up being the best damn sushi I ever had. Also, I learned that Riesling goes well with Sushi.

I didn't do too much on Sunday. Did some interface tweaks on my website and the Save Ardmore Coalition website.

For those of you reading this who live in Lower Merion, I hope I'll be seeing you at the Fund Raiser Benefit for Moira Shaughnessy, who was tragically hit with a case of viral encephalitis recently. It will be held on Saturday, March 17th at Brownie's 23 East in Ardmore.

I was pretty busy on Saturday. First, I went back home to visit my parents and, after dropping my stuff off there, ran over to my Sister's place to work on her network. Wireless had not been configured on her newer LinkSys, so I took care of that. Then, I had the fun of setting up wireless on her roommate's laptop, an IBM Thinkpad. It turns out that if you actually like, use the Windows control panel to set up wireless, you are completely and totally screwed. It seems that IBM decided to ship their own network configuration utility, which overrides the settings in Windows. Gee, thanks guys. Only took me 3 reboots to figure THAT out.

Then, it was back home to work on Mom's computer. Her computer is a 4 year old eMac whose hard drive died with a click of death recently. There is a very good reason why eMacs are no longer being sold and the task of replacing a hard drive would be why. After about 20 screws, 2 Google searches, 1 PDF, and half a bottle of Shiraz, I finally got to where the hard drive was. As I replaced it, I realized that, unlike in a PC, I had to reassemble virtually the entire machine before I could boot it up to make sure it actually recognized the new hard drive.

So, put all the screws back in, started the machine up, and it actually booted. From there, I just needed to install OS/X, perform about 4 years(!) of security updates, and the machine is good as new. I still need to tweak a few things on that machine, but I think I'll use the service at https://www.copilot.com/ for that. It'll be quicker than taking another weekend trip up to my parents' place to do 10 minutes of work.
