I now have super hearing.

About 2 months ago, my right ear started ringing. Since it had gone on for so long, I visited Dr. K about it earlier today. He looked in my ears and said, "I can't see past all the earwax". So he brought out a giant syringe, filled it with lukewarm water, and squirted it in each of my ears several times. It was mildly painful because of all the wax that was being dislodged. When he was done with each ear, he showed me the balls of wax that came out. Each ear produced a ball of wax about the size and shape of a raisin. Kinda creepy. Another examination of my ears showed that everything was back to normal.

And now, my hearing is super sharp. I notice all the little sounds: the clicking of my mouse, the rustling of my pants, the static of the AM radio, and how darn loud my toilet is!

Let's see... interesting things that I did over the weekend... not a whole lot, there. I mostly hung around my place and took care of some various chores. Saturday evening I purchased Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando. The game is quite impressive. I've been working my way through it and it's like... a version of Jak 2 that's more balanced and easier to play through. The main game is pure action where you fight enemies, but there's also mini-games where you can fly a ship, race a bike, or fight in an arena against hordes of enemies. There are also some really cool gadgets, like the boots that let you walk on walls ala The Matrix. I think it's worth the $40 I spent on it.

The new job is going really well. I really can't give that many details of what I'm doing, NDA and all that. But Twisted Python sure is fun! Oh, and my company laptop arrived yesterday. I've been having fun getting GenToo set up on it. GenToo is definitely a distribution for power users. :-)

Seeya!

And how...?

I asked Dr. K that very question, and he said there's nothing I can do to prevent wax buildup. Using q-tips is like "packing a cannon", as he put it. The only thing I can do is come back in the future if there are further wax problems.

Um... did I mention that the syringe he used was as big as my head? The size was definitely in the "don't try this at home" range.

If you _ram_ them in, sure it's like packing a cannon. If you insert and twist along the q-tip's axis so that you're rubbing wax off with the sides of the nib, you're definitely taking _some_ of the stuff out.

The problem with Q-tips is their thick head, even if you twirl as suggested, if there's already a big enough quantity you just push that in with the tip.
For that, however, there are some plastic Q-tips that have a little loop on the tip, those are thin and actually pull instead of pushing the wax. Of course you have to use them properly and be more careful than with ordinary Q tips.

My dad once syringed a lump of wax out of his ear the size of a pea. Wax isn't as much a problem as getting water stuck in my ear after a shower. Ugh, I hate that more than anything. Because of the pressure and suction in your ear, it just WILL NOT come out. =(

Ear Wax

When I turned ...um..about 25, I started having far more ear wax build up that I'd ever had previously in my life. Now, I flush my own ears at home, and use an ear wax softener that you can get at the drugstore, over the counter, about ever 1.5 or 2 months to clear out wax so I don't get those plugs in there about the size of a raisin. I know -just- how you feel, really, I do. And even then I've had to go to the doctor a couple of times to have them flushed out because I just couldn't get it done properly at home.

I'm a few years younger, but i've got the same exact problem - I use the softening drops whenever I can tell there's a loss of sensitivity (usually indicated when I have to turn the stereo up rediculously loud).

I also recommend Giza get a blue ear syringe. In the shower, lean forward and to the side and flush with warm water, it works great.

Addendum - You should be able to get the lil blue syringes at the same section of the pharmacy as the drops, sometimes in a package with both.

Yes, the little blue bulb-like syringe. However, I've run into another problem with just using water to flush the ear. If you don't get all the water out, you can end up with a case of swimmers ear. And trust me, having had it twice, it's not fun!

The doctor suggested that instead of straight water, I use a 1:3 hydrogen peroxide to water solution to avoid that. There's some bubbly cleansing action with the peroxide.

Would you like some?

I can hook you up with some wicked ear cleaning tools.. They're called Q-tips.. Man you'll never have waxy ears again. They're awesome. ^^

Wet the q-tips and spin them as you gently work them into your ear to wet/rub over as much of the area as possible, then repeat with a dry one to remove the remains. Works for me. ;)

Q-tips dipped in hydrogen peroxide work quite well. I occasionally have to get that taken care of too. warm water + hydrogen peroxide + syringe = *gush!* *fizzle* *fizzle* *fizzle*

Ratchet & Clank 2 is awesome, I played it through for weeks and weeks over Xmas. The weapon upgrade level is just staggering, each weapon can be upgraded about 4 times, and there's so many weapons! The in-game challenges are great too, and the arena ones are a great way to earn money.. Plus Ratchet is so murrrr, I just sit there for hours staring at his furry butt sometimes ;) (I avoided buying one of the later armour upgrades because every inch of him ends up covered in an armoured exoskeleton ;)

Dear Spotty-bitch,

This is both horrific and disgusting. Many sympathies,

You indeed are your father's child. He also has a lot of wax build up in his ears, but he seems to remove it ok with a Q-tip (as evidenced from what I see thrown in the wastebasket). His father, your grandfather, also had the same problem. He went to a doctor for periodic cleaning. This is your inheritance. Use it wisely. :-D
