A new virus that infects Windows 2000 and XP machines is out by the name of Korgo. It monitors what you type and sends the keystrokes back to its creator. Things like credit card numbers, bank account passwords, and the like can be captured.

You do not need to do anything special to get this virus, as your machine can receive it over a network that doesn't have a properly configured firewall in place. Microsoft (and myself) is strongly urging people to download and install the K835732 Security Update.

This is yet another reason for getting a Mac, folks. Macs just... don't have these problems.

While I'm bashing Microsoft, I'd like to point out this article written by a former Microsoftie who spells out in detail just how bad Microsoft has it. They've gotten so big that they need new business ideas that will give them billions of dollars in revenue. Things like iPod, which made $46 million in profit this quarter, are chump change to Microsoft, and not of interest to them because they are so darn big.

I don't know if I have that update installed already. I'll just wait for my Windows Automatic Updater to let me know when there's a nce update available.

Then I suggest installing it anyway. Unless you WANT your accounts to be hijacked.

Well it's not like I use credit cards online, not having one myself. So it's not something that I am worried about.

Running the bets of SP2 on XP Pro here...

I'm already patched, according to the installer for MS04-011, and I don't worry anyway, cause SP2 gives XP a very nice firewall. It can filter by process, not just by port, which means:

1) If you permit a process, you don't have to fiddle with ports, and dynamically assigned listeners work right.

2) You're alerted if a new, non-microsoft process tries to access the internet. In or Out. It's very luser-resistant.

So what? It's not about the platform, it's about OS. I run PCs with Linux / FreeBSD. They don't have problems either.

I know that and you know that, but expecting my mother to run Linux would be cruel and unusual punishment. And it's not something that I want to support, anyway.
