Crazy weekend
Feb. 26th, 2007 10:14 amI was pretty busy on Saturday. First, I went back home to visit my parents and, after dropping my stuff off there, ran over to my Sister's place to work on her network. Wireless had not been configured on her newer LinkSys, so I took care of that. Then, I had the fun of setting up wireless on her roommate's laptop, an IBM Thinkpad. It turns out that if you actually like, use the Windows control panel to set up wireless, you are completely and totally screwed. It seems that IBM decided to ship their own network configuration utility, which overrides the settings in Windows. Gee, thanks guys. Only took me 3 reboots to figure THAT out.
Then, it was back home to work on Mom's computer. Her computer is a 4 year old eMac whose hard drive died with a click of death recently. There is a very good reason why eMacs are no longer being sold and the task of replacing a hard drive would be why. After about 20 screws, 2 Google searches, 1 PDF, and half a bottle of Shiraz, I finally got to where the hard drive was. As I replaced it, I realized that, unlike in a PC, I had to reassemble virtually the entire machine before I could boot it up to make sure it actually recognized the new hard drive.
So, put all the screws back in, started the machine up, and it actually booted. From there, I just needed to install OS/X, perform about 4 years(!) of security updates, and the machine is good as new. I still need to tweak a few things on that machine, but I think I'll use the service at https://www.copilot.com/ for that. It'll be quicker than taking another weekend trip up to my parents' place to do 10 minutes of work.
