The subject line pretty much describes what last night was for me. I had what I think was my first real case of food poisoning. I foolishly ate an apple that I bought yesterday, without washing it first. As it got later into the evening, my stomach started to rumble, then hurt. I was able to sleep for a couple of hours, but I remember waking up around 2 AM and making a mad dash to the bathroom.

So yeah, that sucked.

Between that, not being able to keep fluids down, and not sleeping much, I called off of work today. Earlier in the morning, I discovered I could drink some liquids again, so I had the sodas that [livejournal.com profile] omnibahumut left at my place (heh!), popped a multi-vitamin, and napped some more.

I'm feeling a whole lot better now. My fever has gone down a bit. I think I'm going to swing by Wawa shortly to pick up some clear fluids, and then maybe I'll try working my way up to Cup O' Noodles later tonight.

Here's a detailed article on food poisoning.

Also, I discovered that if you want to report suspected cases of food poisoning, you can do so by calling Philadelphia's Food Protection Office at (215) 685-7495.

Wow, I've never heard of food poisoning from fresh fruit before. Do you have any idea how much fruit I've eaten right off the counter? It's something like 90% of my entire fruit intake! My stomach must be made of iron.

Apparently it can lead to all kinds of nasty things like e. coli infections and salmonella poisoning. Honestly, this is news to me as well, and I thought I was pretty up to date on food safety.

Hope you're feeling better soon, Giza!

As long as my beef and pork levels were pretty high that day, and said fruit was right in front of me to eat for free, I have been known to indulge on the odd peice. But if you think that's unlike me, know that I just ate some FISH.

Eww! I always thought that an apple a day kept the doctor away. Or at least provide one with plenty of powerbooks.

Get better soon, now.

I once got food poisoning from a thai mussel soup. It involved some kind of neurotoxins; within a few minutes of starting to sip the soup, I could feel my lips and face getting numb, and then I got dizzy and couldn't sit up.

Spent 2 days in bed from that one. :-P

Very unlikely that it was food poisoning from an apple. Much more likely just a passing virus that decided that you'd enjoy a bit of gastroenteritis that day.

Interesting. Since I haven't had a stomach virus that bad in about 10 years.

Hi,

I have to agree with Uncle Kage. I had a subway BLT last October, then got seriously ill for several days, and I had never been this sick...

It was a massive stomach bug that took several of our department out for a few days...I've never in my life felt like vomiting and the runs both at the same time. You'd almost think that was just about impossible...

In any event, it passed, but the BLT left such a lingering association I will never again have a Subway BLT again, even though I know now it was never the source of the problem. Hope you feel better Giza.

Undoubtedly a virus. Likely one of these quick stomach flu bugs that has been so prevalent these days. Massive vomiting, generally hourly for a while, nasty fever, and a fair amount of it clearing up by the next day.

Actual food poisoning tends to be incapacitating (in the instances I have seen of it), except when you need to hurl (if you're lucky).

Ooog. I got stomach flu a couple of years ago. Threw up seven times in one night. It was NOT fun.

A good drink for upset stomachs is ginger ale. Probably because it's so bubbly. Hope you are feeling better.

Yep.. sounds like a general 24 hour flu to me, but it is possible. After all, you have no idea if someone forgot/chose not to wipe before picking up apples in the store. Anyway, I hope you get better soon. Powerade tends to do well for rehydration after one of those nasties gets you down.
