Friending/defriending guidelines

I've seen people making "friends policy" type posts to their LJs in the past. I've wanted to do something like that for awhile, but every time I started to write such a post, I'd feel pretentious. To me, it was kinda like saying, "You must be THIS cool to be my friend", and that made me feel rather uncomfortable.

So, I figured I would post "guidelines" instead. Guidelines aren't as strict as policies in that they don't always have to be followed. And anyone who knows me reasonably well knows that, like most humans, I can be angry, stubborn, hypocritical, and/or a real jerk at times. That being said, here's a rough list of guidelines on why I might friend/defriend you:

If I friend you, it's likely for one of the following reasons:

1. We know each other IRL or online.
2. I met you briefly IRL or online and you made a good impression on me.
3. One of my friends speaks highly of you.
4. I've read your website or LJ and think you are cool/interesting.

If you find yourself friended by me, you are under NO obligation to friend me back.

If you want to friend me, that is fine. Feel free to drop a note on my LJ telling me how you found my journal, if you like.

I don't have much in the way of defriending guidelines as I usually defriend people on a case by case basis.

I haven't run across any "friends policy" just yet, afaik. Most seem to friend me if they met me IRL, or think that I'm interesting. Your friending guidelines sounds a lot like mine, just not typed out anywhere (yet)

same here for the msot part i treat my lj friend slsit as it's name implies, we have to be atleast semi friends to be on it....I dotn liek friending strangers or peopel i dunno. Not liek it matters much as i dotn have many friends only posts....If we''ve had more then a 5 minute conversation at a con or onlien i'll probably add you, unless you scare me :)

If we stop talking ro we have soem sort fo conflcit long term, then i ax you

I "friend" folks that I meet (as we did at Dorsai Thing); I also friend anyone who comments on my posts, either on my LJ, or in group discussion areas.

I figure that if they had something interesting to say, I'd like to keep watch on what comes up in their journals, as it might be stimulating.

I also friend those who are reading me, just to see what's up.

My explanation for friending you isn't all that exotic. I looked through your LJ and website and saw that you attended some of the same cons that I do, just not necessarily the same *years* as I did.

I figured we would have run into one another at a con given sufficient time.
