Heh. No offense, but this doesn't do anything to dispel the smug-asshole aura around the Mac community.
And how many of those shiny new Macbooks do you think have XP on them...precisely for this purpose? I'll bet that Apple tracks that (provided you use official software to do it) and I'll bet it ain't pretty.
My macbook runs XP, and as soon as I get the transfer I'm putting one of those red circle with a line through it (I dont know what to call it other than the "no" sign >.>) over my glowy apple >.>
In my experience Mac users sit at their computers just as much as PC users.
Also, it's pretty much a self-selected sampleset because people who play games wouldn't get a Mac in the first place. This comic just seems to turn promiscuousness, cheating on your partner, and the fact that computer games can't run into... good things?
I might be offended, if I hadn't been home in NY visiting my parents last week, using their new Mac, and, after crashing its apps four times in one evening (as is my experience with every Mac I've ever touched), giving it up to use their 10+ year old Win98 PC, which BTW never crashed.
So maybe they do have more time for their girlfriends because their computers don't work.
I simply cannot use a Mac without crashing something. Often it's the browser that can't handle a web page and just collapses with a useless error message.
I took Safari down twice, Firefox down once, and had to reboot it after a new driver install failed to take.
I actually -bought- one and have had much the same experience.
The UI is generally sort of half-baked in ways that even cursory QA would immediately highlight and the UI doesn't provide a lot of the simple "oh hey and we made this more convenient for you too" sort of things Windows users take for granted.
Also, applications in general do not, in fact "Just Run" as Mac users claim when comparing Mac to PC. (Curiously, when I report application or full OS crashes, Mac users typically say either a) that's doesn't sound likely, it must be your hardware (which is a little odd because the same ones will often claim that never happens either), or b) that's because you're using third party software and not JUST Apple products (which is a little strange too, since "pure" Apple products like Final Cut, iCal, iPhoto, and the entire operating system itself crash on me regularly).
I'm not saying it's all bad, because it's not... but it's certainly not the trouble-free "The Mac Just Works" utopia the evangelists claim it is, either. :)
This was also my experience when using a Mac at my last job. It was a Mac shop, so I had to get one for it. It was as unstable as Vista ... at least 3 times in one week, it couldn't handle task switching (from a browser to a shell window); the whole system froze when task switching, and had to be cold booted. This was on a 2 GB MacBook. It was about as stable as a 1GB dual-core Vista laptop.
(I was developing with Ruby on Rails, my own compiled version of Ruby, and Rails 1.2.3 & 1.2.5 later).
I go for *nix whenever possible. Sure, the OS/X's bash shell is better than cygwin .. but why not FreeBSD or Linux (or OpenBSD or NetBSD)?
After my interview tomorrow, I am going to be backing up the Vista box and putting Ubuntu on it, likely (I will first try out any FreeBSD LiveCDs I can find and if the wireless networking drivers work fine [no ndiswrapper, please]) I might use that. I know the Ubuntu ones work.
Do they actually update their software? I know mine don't. Annoys the heck out of me...especially when they want to update just iTunes. Ah well...tis the burden of the deskside support geek.
And that's different from an hourglass on Windows how?
I use FireFox both at home and at work. When it freezes up on some stupid Javascript, I'll the wheel on my Mac and an hourglass on my PC at work. Same thing.
And yet, I have found the furry fandom through an MMOPRG, and have found the boyfriend I have been with for 8 years through my previous boyfriend, whom I have also found on an MMORPG. The claim doesn't match my nonIlife.
I used to love using macs in art school. I liked them way more than PCs.
But for me, and for everyone else I know, either I get a mac or get a cheap PC that can do roughly the same thing (albeit more clunkishly and less stylishly) and the option to do anything that doesn't offer mac support. I'd just as soon make a comic with a guy not having any money to take a girl out after buying a mac. I mean, if I could afford it, hell yeah I'd buy a mac, but I'd also keep an updated PC.
And right now I'm off to play my playstation 2, because frankly I don't play PC games often anyway. But what I do play ain't on the mac. Half life 2? Portal? I'm not wasting my life on an MMO, though, that's for sure. I can *stop* playing my playstation.

I'm not sure we should count use a Mac user, since it sounds like you've been shanghaied. ;-)
