Folks might have heard that Steam is finally available for the Mac and that, for a limited time, Portal is available as a free download. Naturally, I made the most of it, and downloaded Portal on Friday evening, beating it just last night. :-)

Downloading Portal was interesting, I had no idea that the game was on the order of 3 Gigs in size. It was a great way to test out my current Internet connection, which performed pretty well, as this graph shows:

Portal Network Usage

As for playing the game itself, someone asked me how Steam and Portal were on the Mac, out of concern that there might just be some emulation going on. This does not seem to be the case, judging by my CPU usage (gameplay began right after the download):

I'd say that my Mac Mini held its own just fine. :-)

I'll probably be on Steam on occasion. If anyone wants to friend me there, feel free. My Steam ID is DmuthAtHome.

Wow, I missed when this game was released for the PS2:

For the curious, the song is called Jungle Boogie and was recorded by Kool & the Gang in 1973.

Let's see how long until the comments turn into a flame war... the clock starts NOW.

Yes, I know the game is 10 years old. Yes, I know I'm a little behind the times to have never played it before. All things considered, I would say that the game has aged pretty well. It was still quite fun to play through, and I liked how the materia and the battle control system worked out.

Anyway, here's the limit break of the final boss, aptly called "Super Nova". You don't need to be a bigtime gamer to appreciate how awesome this is, just a background in basic astronomy and/or be a fan of science fiction:

And yes, anyone who is willing to destroy entire planets just to inflict some damage on you is just a little dedicated, no? :-)

I found this really cool game on Newgrounds: Four Second Frenzy You have 4 seconds to play through a variety of simple games. The trick is to figure out how the game works in 4 seconds or less, and then win said game. It's very challenging and forces you to think fast. Caffeine is recommended.

In other (health) news, my knees keep bothering me. Since it's been 10 days now, I'll be seeing the doctor on Saturday. I did some tests, and I seem to have full range of motion, which is good. I also have no swelling, tenderness, or stiffness. The problems only start when I'm actually on my feet, and hurt a little more when I go up or down steps.

I tried doing the bicycle for 15 minutes on the lowest possible resistance at the gym on Monday night, but that may have been too much since my knees now hurt a little more since then. That's part of the reason why I am going to seek out medical advice -- I might just be doing something wrong! Not that I ever unintentionally made a medical condition worse before or anything!
