So, there's an episode of CSI coming up tonight that's probably going to portray furry in a not so nice light. Repeat after me: it's happened before and it will happen again. These are growing pains that our fandom is going through. Bitching about it in your Live Journals is not the answer, nor is running around yelling "FURRY ISN'T ABOUT SEX!", because denials will only make people think that we have something to hide.

If non-furry friends of yours see the CSI thing and have questions, tell them about some of the positive things in our fandom. Tell them various conventions have raised tens of thousands of dollars for various charities. Tell them about some of the nice artwork that's out there on Yerf. Don't dwell on the negative side that CSI might portray.

Someone put together a FAQ, or more like an "Introduction to Furry Fandom" document recently. It's VERY helpful for people who have "heard" about furry from some mainstream source and would like to know more. It is on the web at: http://www.claws-and-paws.com/furry/Anonymous/furfaq.shtml

That's my 2 tuna on the mattter.

I'm beginning to think that the people who need to take a chill pill the most are the people telling everyone else to take a chill pill. Everywhere I go today in the fandom, people are running around screaming for everyone to stop panicking, but the only ones panicking is them. This has self-fulfilling prophecy written all over it.

I'm not so sure. After watching some of the debates and flamewars that have been popping up in various places lately, I'm pretty sure that everyone's on edge and scrappy.

If the chill pillers are getting shrill, it's because no one is listening to them anymore. :)

It's the same handful of people over and over again. Count them. And all the respondents are saying "Yeah, we know." and "Yeah, we agree." It's preaching to the choir on a grand scale.

When dozens of people are running around crying "Don't Panic!" you begin to think that someone is panicking.

Yes and no. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, there are some DEFINITE factions that feel that all public exposure is bad, and truly DO panic with every mention. (Well, perhaps "panic" isn't the right term. "Bitch and finger-point" comes closer.)

I think Giza's right on.

Personally I'm not too worried - but that probably isn't enough to stop me from bitching a little bit on my LJ tomorrow ;P

I don't look forward to explaining furry to my parents if they make some sort of the connection with pictures of AC and MFM to what's shown on tv tonight (right now they have no idea where I had gone for those weekends). It's more because it'd be a pain and they wouldn't understand anyways.
Should be interesting...

At least we get to see some fursuits on tv ;)

Addenda.

A couple of minor points:

  • "MUCK" stands for nothing. It was created as a pun on "MUD" and "MUSH", which did stand for things. Various acronyms have been proposed after the fact ("Multi-User Character/Creation Kit" being the one I first heard), but the one in the FAQ you host seems to be getting more mindshare lately.

  • After getting a "wait, isn't that some sexual fetish?" instead of the usual "huh?" when mentioning furry, I put together a comparison (http://www.angelfire.com/d20/roll_d3_for_this/furry-scifi.html) between furry and sci-fi fandoms, to give people a frame of reference to a fandom they probably knew a bit more about. If you find this useful, feel free to link or mirror it too.

CSI... CSI... Crime Scene Investigations, right? Another offshoot of Law and Order? I can see it now. The opening teaser... Our first shot of the murder scene. A guy in a bunny suit lies twisted across a bed, his throat gouged out. Flashbulbs go off. Someone picks up a condom wrapper from the floor, shakes his head, and bags it. Another pulls long grey hairs out of the bunny suit.

"Looks like another furry was here, McGuiness."

Dramatic close-up of the dectective. He makes a disgusted face as he takes out a cigarette. "Damn furries. I knew I picked a bad day to stop smoking." Cut to opening theme montage.

can't wait to see what kind of silly, contrived furry murder story they come up with for this one. They'll probably use the setting as license to write something really stupid, as opposed to a realistic fandom murder... like, say, someone kill-filing Sibe.

It's gonna be lurid and hilarious. Soon we won't have to worry about our sexual image at all, folks will start thinking that we eat people. And not in the vore sense either.

This is great. I wish they'd make an episode where some fan gets killed at a Star Trek convention, and it turns out it was a Klingon honor killing. We need MORE murder shows about obsessive fan groups! STAT!
