While having a chat with one of my neighbors tonight, I gave her an extra Anthrocon 2003 conbook that I had laying around and told her, "This is from that convention that I told you about." So she started asking questions about what exactly the con is. I explained to her about the Artists Alley, the Dealers' Room, the Guests, the Charity Auction, and the rest of the stuff that goes on. She seemed rather interested by it all, so I showed her some pictures that I had taken at AC 2001. She thought the picture of Fursuit Twister was the neatest thing.

And now she's thinking of coming to the con this coming year.

And that would be one more person who isn't furry, yet knows about it and thinks it is a pretty neat thing. People who are not part of our fandom, yet willing to stand up for it is the most valuable asset we could hope to have.

Maybe we all should be giving those extra post-convention conbooks away...

There's a HUGE groundswell of what I'll call "party furs" who are going to this week's FurCon -- their first involvement with "furdom". These are folks who wear ears and tails (and masks, and 'suits) mostly to clubs and art events, but have had zero interaction with self-identified furries. See a discussion here.

I'm excited and nervous. There's been some tentative hostility -- mostly because an arrogant "leader" in furdom sent an insanely bitchy email to one of the party furs last year. But I'm hopeful that we can make that person's insecurity irrelevant by just having a good time. :)

Some of us are more concerned with having good artists than having good PR. :P

Some of us are more concerned with PR because our employers and co-workers know about furry. :-)

Good artists are of course nice to have, too.

I think everyone in the fandom is our biggest asset. Getting friends involved in our hobbies is a wonderful thing, but no one is any more or less valuable.

Also, once she buys a con membership, she's part of the fandom, isn't she? :)

if she uses it to burn down the facility where the con is held, then I doubt it :x

...and yet more good news.

Not to mention, once again, Kari my sweetie is tagging along to AC2004. She wants to be a helper on staff too! I didn't twist her arm I swear! So that's cool by me, and I'm sure by you too!

I think in general it's misinformation or misrepresented information that drives non-furs away from the cons and furries in general. Most people are probably at least neutral on the subject if shown what it's about, at least I'm guessing that.

'Course, I haven't quite been able to convince my non-furry friends to join me for AC ;P

That's wonderfully neat. Everyone who discovers furrydom has to find it somehow, after all, and that's certainly a good introduction.

But then, I've always had a positive reaction at my jobs to my furriness - indeed, when I began at one place, I was specifically asked to introduce myself on the first day as Red (see icon). It was indeed a very cool company. ^_^
